Restaurant Il Cristallo di Neve | Campo dell’Osso (Subiaco, Roma)

Our first review about the dog friendly restaurants in Italy is dedicate to “Il Cristallo di Neve”.

Location e how to get there

“Il Cristallo di Neve” restaurant is located inside the Simbruini Mountains Park in the locality of Campo dell’Osso, near Subiaco, in the province of Rome.
From Rome: take the motorway A24 Roma-L’Aquila-Teramo (exit Vicovaro-Mandela), continue on the SR5 until the junction with Arsoli and continue on SR411 up to the Tangenziale di Subiaco. Finally, continue on the provincial roads 40a, 40b and 44b to arrive at Monte Livata.
Once you reach Monte Livata, continue along the main road until you reach Campo dell’Osso, after a series of hairpin bends. The restaurant is clearly visible on the right of the square.
We report the presence of speed cameras on the SR5 and SR411.

To visit nearby: the trails in the Simbruini Mountains Park

We are located within the Simbruini Mountains Park, therefore, there are numerous nature trails to be covered on foot. We invite you to visit the Park website to find out which trail is best for you.
However, we can recommend the walk that leads to Valle Maiura: from the square of Campo dell’Osso continue along the main road until you reach the entrance of the trail (signposted) and park the car. Continuing on foot you will immerse yourself in a beautiful beech forest, ideal during the summer thanks to the pleasant coolness created by the trees. After some gentle ups and downs you will arrive at the beautiful Valle Maiura clearings. From there it is possible to continue, passing through Tre Confini, up to the plain of Camposecco, known for being the scene of the famous italian spaghetti-western film “Lo Chiamavano Trinità” (with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill).

The “Il Cristallo di Neve” restaurant, at 1600 meters above sea level, enjoys a pleasant and relaxing view of the Park territory.

During the summer you can eat on the outside terrace (the presence of umbrellas and awnings guarantee a suitable shade for us and our quadrupeds). When the weather is colder, Maurizio and Irene (the managers) will welcome you, without problems, inside the restaurant, where dogs are allowed.

After a small “welcome” you are ready to order. The appetizer very abundant (can easily replace one or both main courses) consists of cheeses, cold cuts and various tasty tastings that vary from time to time.
The menu, then, has a wide selection of first and second courses, with typical local ingredients. Paste stuffed with buffalo ricotta, truffle or speck and brie, as well as the classic fettuccine or pappardelle that can be seasoned with porcini mushrooms, wild boar ragout, truffles and much more.
Among the second plate (meat) we find cut, grilled meats, steaks, roasted meat …. Definitely to try is the grilled or fried lamb, especially with potatoes (hand-cut) fried and baked in the oven!

For wines, rely on Maurizio who will advise you the best.

Tiramisu is one of the desserts. Do not miss: dry biscuits (typical of the area) offered by the house.

To conclude Maurizio will delight you with an excellent Rum with an intoxicating scent or with a barricaded grappa. Only for real connoisseurs!

The restaurant is open only for lunch. Possibility of menus for vegetarians / vegans (we suggest, in any case, to call to inform themselves by presenting your needs).

Useful tips

  • It is advisable to bring water to keep hydrated (especially in summer with high temperatures) the four-legged friends, as there are no fountains on site.
  • Along the trails you can meet animals in the wild (such as horses, cows, wild boar).
